Water damage is undoubtedly the most common type of damage that can occur in a house, apart from fires and explosions of course. In fact, nearly one million cases are recorded each year. I therefore advise you to be well insured in order to be able to cope when such a problem occurs. In this article, I suggest you find out what you should do if water damage occurs in your home.
The right reactions to have
If there is water damage in your home, the first thing I advise you to do, especially in an apartment, is to warn your neighbor and the union. Then, you will cut off all the water and electricity supplies in your house.
Take pictures and then start to dry the place. Once this is done, you must contact your insurer in order to draw up an inventory of the things destroyed by the water damage, but also to determine the origin of the disaster.
Writing a water damage report
You can write a water damage report yourself. However, I advise you to stay on the phone with your insurer while you make a list of everything that has been damaged in your house due to water.
Once it’s done, you need to sign the paper and send it by registered mail to your insurer. This is best to ensure that you receive the document. It is essential to do this within five days of the loss, otherwise your declaration will no longer be admissible.
Prepare for any eventuality
If the damage is important, and you think that you are going to get a few thousand euros for it, I advise you to put all the chances on your side to get a compensation up to the level of the disaster.
In addition to the photos taken, you should also look for proof of the existence of the goods destroyed by the water damage, such as invoices for example, especially for valuable equipment. In the worst case, you may need an insurance adjuster, but this is not always necessary.
